I created the work Microfon in 2017 during an eight-month residency at the Tarabya Cultural Academy in Istanbul. When freedom of expression is suppressed by direct or indirect state power, we are living in an open-air prison. This can happen anywhere, at any time. Having grown up in a totalitarian society where certain socio-political structures could not be questioned, I felt a need to create this sculpture as a metaphor for the current situation.
